Fire Chiefs are elected by popular vote by the Fire Department membership. From 1949 to 1999 Fire Chiefs were elected until such time of resignation or removal. In 1999 a minimum qualifications standard was established along with a five year term. Once elected by the Fire Dept, the Towns of Dayton and Lyman then appoint him as the towns Fire Chief. The Fire Chief held the radio designation of 800 until 1995 when it was changed to Car 1.
